World Book Day
Lots of exciting things happened at Essendine Primary to celebrate World Book Day. Polly Faber, the author, came to visit KS1 in the morning and read her books to the children and talked about how she writes stories and the importance of reading. Around the school, many children and staff dressed up as their favourite book character. There was a ‘Round Robin Reading Challenge,’ where the teachers each spent five minutes in each class to read the same book to the children.

Abi Elphinstone’s Night Spinner book launch

Primary Challenge: Mayor's Fund for London
On Thursday Heba, Rayaan and Ryan (Year 5) represented Essendine at this year's Primary Maths Challenge. The motto was 'Sometimes you win; sometimes you learn’. Our students were very competitive and represented our school proudly. Activities included: tangrams puzzles, pentominoes and code breaking. Children had to complete a variety of challenges within a time frame. Well done team!

Recommended books
Visit the English page for a comprehensive list of the ‘100 books to read before you leave Year 4’ and the ‘100 books to read before you leave Year 6.’ These are award winning books that are hugely popular reads with the children. The school now has many of these titles available in the library to be enjoyed by the children.

New fiction books
We hope that the children are enjoying the new fiction books that are available to loan from school. The brand new books, kept in plastic wallets for protection, are being thoroughly enjoyed by the children at home. As well as the new books, we recommend that parents sign up to ww.lovereading4schools.co.uk If you open a free parent account, you will gain access to recommended book lists for each year group for you to purchase online, or loan from a local library.
