Reading Den

4 Jun 2019

Essendine Primary School had its grand opening of the new Reading Den on the first day of this term.  The new Lord Mayor arrived to cut the ribbon and officially open the room, along with three local Maida Vale councillors who helped to support the redesign project through ward funding.  As well as these important guests, children's author Ross Montgomery, who has been closely linked with our school through the charity Patron of Reading, did an exclusive Q&A and book reading with 18 lucky readers in the school.  Originally an unused cloakroom, the Reading Den has been redesigned as a cosy and relaxing space where children can go to read for enjoyment, away from the classroom. This could only be achieved through the use of ward funding, provided by the local council.  Research shows that reading for enjoyment is so important for children.  It is also proven to help them in their attainment across all subjects.  This room will make sure children are free to choose a quality book to read at leisure." Yasmine, a reading ambassador at Essendine Primary, said:  "All of the pupils are excited to start using it and reading all of the new books."
The school also plans to use the space in the future for children's book groups and parent groups.
